  • Intentional burination of projectile points
  • Distal and proximal
  • Post-breakage - not from impact
  • Restricted to Paleo-Indian and Archaic period sites in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, COlorado, Nebraska, Alabama, Michigan, Alaska, Northwest Territories
  • Highest frequency during Paleo-Indian period, far less common in Archaic period
  • All 'struck' burins
  • Distal burination used to shape working edges
  • Proximal burination used to shape hafting element
    • Transverse basal burination is a diagnostic attribute of Decatur points in Alabama (Cambron 1957)
  • May be parents for the Burin Spall Tool (Giddings 1956)
  • Closest similar specimens are from the North American Arctic, post-Denbigh Flint Complex
  • "Distally faceted projectile points are considered true burins because they conform in all respects to the burin types

known in the Old World"(Epstein 1963:199)
